Bookstagram: A Parody

*Disclaimer: 99 percent sarcasm below

Looking at all these lovely bookstagram pictures makes me want to start an instagram. How hard can it be? I just have to copy some of the famous types of book pictures and add my own twist.

For example, I know that everyone loves sock pictures with cute kneehigh socks and books.

Why stop there? How about ankle socks? How about all the socks??

I think bookstagrammers also like to take pictures of books with cups of coffee or tea at shops and cafes.

And I really wanted to do that too!  But I forgot to take a picture before I drank it so I’m just gonna show an empty Starbucks cup. Same thing. I don’t know it how it fell on its side but whatever it just adds to the aesthetic.

Right?

Wow, fine, ok so I’m not at a coffee shop so you say it doesn’t count. I’ve seen people take pictures of books when they travel around to cool places.

Hmm, I’ll do that. I like to read near bags of plastic water bottles because it’s just so calming you know?

2

I think my favorite kinds of book pictures is the one where they artfully arrange different things around the book. Sometimes random. That shouldn’t be too hard.

food

Everyone likes books and food. So I’ll use marinara sauce to complement the red from the book cover and I found some buttermilk pancake mix and honey mustard dressing so why not?

3

I always see stacks of pretty books together. But that’s just limited. Why don’t I stack everything? I mean, isn’t it discrimanatory to only stack books? Are books the only stackable things out there??

4

And, of course, I didn’t forget about filters and lighting. Who do you take me for?? You have to take pictures in bright light.

So like this one?

5

I can totally see behind the book clearly. What? You can barely see the book? Well, damn, I can’t control the way the light hits. Gosh.

And let it not be said that I don’t know how to be dramatic. Just add a black and white filter.

6

Simple. Here I combine both an artful arrangement with the black and white filter. I mean I don’t get why people are saying it just looks like a messy desk. It’s not, it’s called a beautifully artful arrangement like this one.

In all seriousness, I love bookstagram and I love looking at pictures of beautiful books. Actual beautiful pictures taken from these bookstagrams (who are way more talented at picturetaking and editing than me) and that you should definitely follow:

Some of these bookstagrams were featured in my favorite bookstagrams post a while back so feel free to check that out if you want.

    1. Haha, this is how I feel about bookstagram. I’d love to throw a War and Peace into my Nan’s flower bed and take some arty snaps but I literally don’t have time to brush my hair sometimes 😂

    1. Same! I’m lucky if I even get a halfway decent pic of one book with ok lighting but then it doesn’t matter because the quality comes out looking like a pixelated blob lol. I really want to take better pics of books though because they’re so fun to look at. I’m so shallow lol.

  1. These are hilarious, Carolyn. I think my favorite is your food picture. I love staring at book photography, but sometimes I wonder where the heck all those beautiful props come from. Lighting is so tricky. If the sun isn’t out, I don’t even attempt to take a photo.

    1. Thanks Alicia =) Ikr? I always see ones with typewriters and I’m like they still sell those LOL? Also, there was one picture of A Darker Shade of Magic with a bunch of red spoons and I’m wondering if they just happen to have red spoons lying around that fit with the red coloring of the book.
lol even when the sun is out, mine still manages to look uneven :/

      1. I take pics with my phone too woops lol. I wish I had money to invest in a really good camera though. They’re fun to play with and makes me more motivated to take good pics haha

  2. OH MY GOSH. I LOVE THIS. XD I think I laughed the hardest when I saw that empty Starbucks cup on its side. And LOL. Actually your reenactment of The Winner’s Curse photo is EXACTLY (or pretty close) like how the original photo really looks like. Editing does wonders. >.<

    1. And that photo was actually ridiculously hard to take. That tree was actually in a very, very ghetto neighborhood and I told my dad to stop the car so I could take a quick photo. And cars kept coming by… The struggle.

      1. O: I think I assumed it was a wall decal of a tree lol..did you just happen to have the Winner’s kiss with you??
lol omg all that hard work..well it paid off cause it looks beautiful 😉

      2. I actually read and finished The Winner’s Curse in the car ride to and from Charlotte so that’s why it was with me. Plus, I never carried books when I’m out with friends but I’ve started to just because they’re so many good nature-y places when I’m on the go. There’s been times I want to take a bookstagram photo but then forgot my book at home. So yeah. Gosh, I sound sort crazy lol.

  3. Haha great post! This was hilarious XD esp. the one about drinking your coffee before taking a picture! I love bookstagram! A lot of the photos are staged and set up, thats why they look so perfect! How people arrange their props with books look awesome. I think that flowers and candles are key items to include!

    1. Thanks Thuong! =) I got the inspiration from a Starbucks cup I saw lying around haha.
Well, I wish I could stage it as well as some bookstagrammers haha
So true! which is fine with me, I love candles haha and don’t forget hanging lights in bedrooms

      1. I think you just need a lot of pretty props 😀 its very inspiring! Yeah fairy lights. I like the idea of candles but I don’t trust myself with them, as I’m quite clumsy XD

  4. I love this! I I wish I could be a bookstagrammer, but it’s so much harder than it looks. Plus there is the whole time issue. Those pictures take a surprising amount of time to set up and edit.

  5. hahaha 😂 i’ve been wanting to start a bookstagram, but lighting has always been a problem for me, and it seems like having fairy lights and pretty socks is a very important key point in photos for bookstagrammers 😂

    1. Haha go for it! I’m sure you’ll figure out the lighting along the way. Lighting is a very trial and error part of photography as I’ve learned. And yes haha, fairy lights just seem to make everything more sophisticated and tumblr-y
