Genre: New Adult Paranormal Romance

Synopsis: Goodreads

Rating: ★★☆☆☆ (2.5)

This is a book that makes me not like the New Adult genre. I have problems with the New Adult genre in general but this book seems to tick all the categories that I don’t like about the genre.

Let’s start off with the characters. You have Ivy, the innocent NA heroine with an angsty past. Check. You have Ren, the NA hero who is the token bad boy who says inappropriate things. Oh, he also has an angsty past. Check. You have Valerie, the best girlfriend who’s really only there to emphasize how hot said bad boy is. Also, the more sexually promiscuous one. Check. And you have Tink who just might as well be the “gay best friend”. Check. Normally, I don’t mind if you use archetypical characters, but I would hope that you make them different from all the other archetypes that exist in literature. Because of this, I couldn’t seem to care about these characters because their every thought, every piece of dialogue was also as cliché as their characters.

Armentrout tries to build sexual tension by having Ren invade Ivy’s personal space for really no reason. Wow, a bad guy is coming this way, let me shove you against the wall to protect you and then proceed to have a sexual moment to show readers we have insane sexual chemistry. The banter between the two main characters only comes into play because Ren does such absurd things that you can’t help but wonder why every other person in the book seems to adore him.

The plot itself was boring and the plot “twists” were so predictable.

The paranormal aspects were pretty well done in such a short span of pages. I also admire how Armentrout includes pop culture references in the story without making it sound awkward or contrived. The one redeeming quality of this book was that it was fun. It’s the type of book you read when you need a pick-me-up or need something quick to read on the beach.

If you’ve read this book, let me know your thoughts! I feel like I’m in the minority for not liking a Jennifer L. Armentrout book.
