September 2016 Favorites

I started two new jobs this month. Now I love going to new places and interacting with new people as I’ve had to do in September. But at the same time, I hate doing those things because it gives me an all-consuming nervousness and fear of being incompetent. A week into working, my supervisor gave me a lab coat to borrow so I would look more official and of course, I had forgotten to tuck in the collar (because I’m absentminded af) so while she was explaining to the other workers (who were older than me) what we would be working on, she told me my collar was untucked and proceeded to straighten it for me before continuing to explain the procedure, which as you can imagine made me feel quite embarrassed. I know she meant well; that small gesture just pushed all those incompetent and nervous buttons I had. It was definitely a learning experience.

Other things I knew about myself but became 100x magnified while working this month

  1. I really really suck at first-impression small talk.
  2. I actually prefer long car rides by myself.
  3. I have a love-hate relationship with complacency

Complacency is an odd thing because when I get used to something, I slip into habit. Habit turns into complacency. I like the structure of habit but it makes me feel content when I know I still have things to accomplish. I’ll be happy with the way I’ve always done things even though I know there are probably better ways to do them. I’ll trick myself into thinking I’m satisfied but remember that this is not really what I was looking for in the first place. It’s a weird dynamic but I hope that my sense of complacency will not overshadow my goals in the next coming months.

But complacency doesn’t come until after the stressful parts and I have some other favorites that helped me with that stress.

First off, I’ve finally been using the St. Ives face moisturizer which has really helped my skin and is really cooling at the same time. Ironicaly, the St. Ives cleanser really, really dries out your face. They probably want you to buy both that’s why 😉

Image result for st ives face moisturizer

Closer by Chainsmokers has been overplayed on the radio like no other but I do like their other song All We Know ft. Phoebe Ryan. It sounds like Closer in some parts but I like it better. And I listened to some more EDM/dance music this month like Marshmello’s Keep it Mello and Alone. I also completely love Monopoly by Mokita and Cade.

I was so excited this month because this is the first time since becoming an APink fan that I’ve been there for one of their comebacks. And Revolution was so good. I think the fan favorite is Drummer boy and Boom Pow Love both of which I really like. I also really liked To Us. I like all of them ok.

And I do know why I haven’t used Blogilates to work out to before but her videos are soo good. I’ve been using her quick workout ones because they’re quick but they actually make me feel like I’m exercising if that makes sense.

I also went to the OC zoo this month which is weird for me because I don’t usually like going to zoos. I find that seeing animals in cages kind of depresses me. Idk why because I really like aquariums. The mountain lion cage was only about twice as big as my room which isn’t a lot considering there were two mountain lions in there.

Mountain lion!
Lizards. I literally thought they were fake until they twitched an eye
Golden Eagle death glaring at someone

I know I’m 11 days late but how was your Septemeber? Any sudden realizations about yourself? What are you looking forward to in October?

August 2016 Favorites

August has never been my favorite month for many reasons; it just feels like the calm before the storm where everything is at a standstill and everything is coming to a close before fall, before school, before things really get down to business.

A lot of my August was devoted to job searching which really taught me the value of patience, a virtue that I’ve never had least of all with myself. There’s nothing quite like offering up a thousand resumes only to receive maybe two interviews. But I did it. I’m officially a Biology tutor. It’s one of those jobs that’s a need by basis so they don’t need me every week so still in the midst of job searching. But now I wish I had just been more patient with myself and told myself that I would eventually find a job and not rush into things. Anyways my whole job looking experience can be summed up with this video with a few tweaks. It’s so accurate especially near the beginning. And I actually did have to solve a problem when I was interviewing for the tutoring job.

Among the depressing search for jobs, I took a day trip to LA and Hollywood with my friends. We went to the infamous Eggslut which is worth most of the hype I suppose even though we waited an hour to get our food..

Right across from Eggslut is the Bradbury building which was elegant but a little anticlimactic because we could only tour the bottom of the building (ugh).

One of the top floors was actually featured in 500 Days of Summer at the very end when Joseph Gordon Levitt meets Autumn. It’s also in a twix commercial that’s on TV right now. It’s featured in a lot of other movies but the most notable one is probably Blade Runner (which I haven’t seen).

Image result for 500 days of summer bradbury building

We waited in line for the Broad but couldn’t make it time so we just took pictures at Grand Central Park.

I’m kind of ashamed to say I live in SoCal but I haven’t been to Hollywood yet until this month. To be honest, now that I’ve been there, it’s slightly overrated because a lot of celebrities don’t even live or work in Hollywood and it’s about the most touristy of touristy places I’ve ever been to. I do wish I could have seen the Kodak theatre though where the Academy awards are held. Instead I just went to the Hall of Fame and the Chinese theater where a bunch of Asian people were trying to convert people to Christianity by waving huge signs and singing songs in the most monotone voices I’ve ever heard.

One of my friends has gone off to pharmacy school in Utah and to celebrate, we spent the day in Pasadena and ate some awesome Korean garlic fried wings.

I watched a ton of Olympics last month, my favorite sport to watch being women’s gymnastics. I’m so in love with Simone Biles and the rest of the final five especially when they’re on their best individual event.

Image result for final five olympics 2016

In terms of stuff on the internet, I’ve been loving Wongfu’s lunch break series. I don’t really care for Wongfu’s stuff in general. I find them a bit sappy but I started watching their lunch breaks because Joanna Sotomura (Emma Approved) was on one of them and it was so interesting so I watched a bunch of them. They’re just fun videos where they talk about a certain topic around lunch.

I discovered a lot of Taeyeon’s songs last month. Her voice is so well-suited for high notes and I love her more melancholic ballads. My favorites in August were I, Starlight, and U R

Chewing Gum by NCT Dream came out this month and it’s verry teen pop-y but so catchy. It also reminds me of Kidz Bop which makes me slightly embarassed to like it. But I’m also embarrassed because most of the members are at least 5 years younger than me, the youngest being 14 I believe. Whatever, no shame.

I think Lotto by Exo came out a while ago but the music video just came out recently and I was saw it on the side bar of recommended videos so I clicked and I loved it! Such a pleasant surprise and the dance moves seem so accessible but also really sexy? Like I would not look sexy doing them but I could at least do them adequately. A perfect dark and badass counterpart to the cutesy stuff I’ve been listening to.

Let Me Love You by Justin Bieber, DJ Snake– All I can say is, Bieber slays again.

Two cities by Flume, Beck-I would love to hear this live.

You’ve probably already put August behind you already as it’s already a week into September but let me know the highlights of your August! =)

July 2016 Favorites: I turned 22!!

Did July even happen? I mean I guess it did cause otherwise how could I have turned 22. 22 already feels a lot older than 21 which I don’t feel ready for but kind of have to. As Taylor Swift so accurately puts it,

We’re happy, free, confused, and lonely at the same time
It’s miserable and magical.

I did not ask to grow older!! This is unacceptable!! But existential crisis aside, I hope 22 is better than 21.

To make the most of my birthday (or should I say birthday week), I went to this really awesome seafood place called Sea Salt Grill in Santa Monica. I freaking loved the tilapia. You also get a free churro waffle if you have a yelp account 🙂 How can you beat that? Unless you also get mocha almond fudge at Churned Creamery that same week (even though ice cream does not, as I’ve discovered, taste very good with croissants).

But you know what beats ALL of that? Catching Pokemon at the pier. You can catch at least 100 pokemon in 2 hours if you go to a beach. It’s a Pokémon minefield.

There was so many people there and the app kept crashing half the time but I was so excited when I caught a Dratini hehe. Pokemon aside though, Santa Monica pier at night is so beautiful. I feel like I’m in one of those summer music videos where One Direction is telling us to carpe diem and seize the night and live for the moment.

Ferris wheel at Santa Monica Pier

The only bad thing was that it was sooo cold and I was wearing shorts because it is summer! And speaking of summer fashion essentials, I really loved my blue romper and flower kimono this month; they are so comfy! Also, I’m pretty happy I recently bought a handbag that matches it..sort of.. but I’m in love with it because it’s my favorite shade of pink and it has the envelope shape that I love so much and it’s actually really sturdy.

I seriously brought it everywhere because it’s such a versatile bag, including the movies where I saw Star Trek Beyond in IMAX. My very first IMAX movie!

I love this reboot series a lot. It really is everything I like in a movie: situational humor, endearing characters and a lot of scifi adventure in outer space. And I’m not sure why it was at this movie that I developed a crazy mild obsession with Chris Pine. He’s such a gorgeous human being. And being the bookish nerd that I am, imagine how I reacted when I found out he was an English major at UC Berkeley and that he read and cried while reading A Little Life..

I watched a lot of his interviews this month. These three are some of my favorites; I have no idea why they just make me so happy.

Here’s one with him and Ellen. I think the shower part was hilarious..

Star Trek Beyond Interview

I like how Chris and Sofia are just saying Pikachu while Zachary Quinto is trying to explain how Pokemon Go will be the death of humanity LOL

He also looks hella good in this recent Jimmy Kimmel interview; it’s honestly too bad that Kimmel has to ruin everything by asking shitty sexist questions.

My summer jams have been my usual pop and hip hop. I’ve been obsessed with Jessica Jung’s album, With Love. My two favorite songs being Big Mini World and Fly feat. Fabulous. They’re very feel good summery songs that I was just in the right mood for (her album aesthetic is pretty summery in itself).

Broccoli by Lil Yachty & DRAM– I did not know broccoli meant weed..

In My Room by DJ Mustard, Yellow Claw, Tyga, Ty Dolla Sign– I don’t care for the chorus but the rest is catchy

Ok I lied, these last two aren’t hip hop but I love them all the same.

Cold Water by Major Lazer & Justin Bieber– Bieber’s just on a roll..I think he’s quite suited for EDM actually

Two Weeks by TKA Twigs– If it sounds familiar, it’s from an episode of Mr. Robot. It’s weird because the scene that accompanies this song is disturbing but throughout the entire thing, all I could think of was how good this song was LOL. Anyways it’s electronic R&B which is pretty different from what I usually listen to.

Crash course (Anatomy and physiology series)– my lifesaver for my tests this month. I’m actually surprised at how thorough these videos are because I’ve been reading my anatomy textbook and watching these videos for reinforcement and they basically cover the most important points (and then some) from the text.

Democratic National Convention

No matter what party you are, you cannot deny that President Obama’s and Michelle’s Obama’s speeches were good. It gets me even more pumped up to vote this November.

I know I literally say this on every favorites post but I swear I’m going to write that “What I’ve Been Watching” post this month. I don’t know why I keep putting it off because that post is going to be so long. But whatever. I know it’s late but how was your July? Any favorites? Also, if you have any recommendations that you think I would like based on the things I’ve mentioned, feel free to tell me. I love getting new recommendations 🙂

June 2016 Favorites

Mmmm, I’m thinking back on June right now and to be honest, nothing of consequence really happened besides you know, graduation which I’ve already talked about in my graduation post here. It’s been a pretty mellow month getting used to living back home and going to summer school (I graduated and now I have more school..awks).

One thing I have loved though is just sitting outside at the community college I’m attending and just relaxing which sounds boring af but it’s actually really freaking therapeutic especially when it’s not too hot and there’s a slight wind. It’s like my thinking spot similar to Pooh’s thotful spot (except I don’t have a dedicated spot marked by a wooden sign and my spelling is slightly better)

For the regular pop-song lover in me, I’ve loved Dangerous Woman by Ariana Grande. Ariana Grande should sing more songs like this because I did not know she could sing like this until this song. I had a lot of k-pop favorites in my May wrap up and I only have two this month but the first one is Moon by Jonghyun. Omigosh I love this song. It’s such a catchy song with a slight electronic twist (idk if I’m describing that correctly). I’ve been listening to it nonstop and it’s something I would totally dance to.

On a slightly different note, I’ve been loving KNK’s I Remember from their new album Awake. It was not a song I liked immediately but I kept coming back to it and I loved it a little more each time I listened to it. It’s a medium-tempo R&B song that actually sounded like pop to me (but what do I know). I think their live dancing actually made me like the song even more LOL.

PS: In Seong is so goddamn cute.

In addition to listening to those, I’ve actually been listening to a podcast (surprise!! I rarely listen to podcasts) but the podcast is called WritingExcuses and the speakers are Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn!), Marie Robinette Kowal (Shades of Milk and Honey), Dan Wells (Partials series), and Howard Taylor (Schlock Mercenary).

I’m completely enthralled by this podcast because even though it’s meant for writers of genre fiction, I love how they approach writing different aspects of fiction from protagonists to villains to subgenres like thriller or adventure, how to raise stakes in your novel etc. etc. Highly recommended for both readers and writers. I think the authors are also really engaging and occasionally funny.

And last but not least, a beauty favorite. I have the Abbie nail polish from Julep. It’s currently chipped on my fingers now so I’ll insert a prettier picture from the internet.

I completely adore this nail polish and wore literally every single day of June because a) the light pink color is absolutely stunning; it’s the perfect spring and summer color that literally works well with whatever color you’re wearing. And I mean whatever color. And b) it lasts such a long time and you only need one coat for the color to be solid on your nails.

And that’s a wrap for June! Let me know how your June went! Any favorites?

May 2016 Favorites: In which I indulge in Everything Korean

May alternated between really fun and exciting to almost frustratingly boring. There were periods where I just lazed around doing nothing and then other times, I had so much to do. This was just the last time I had to really spend time with my friends before we head off into the “real” world (my graduation is this Saturday..*starts breathing really heavily*). I had such a great time at my school’s Spring Splash concert. The lineup was awesome. The Naked and the Famous performed which was kind of like my dream come true because I’ve been a fan of them since high school. Although why I didn’t get a picture of them is beyond me.

spring splash
Spring Splash stage

Some of my other favorite performers were Trey Songz (he played all his slow songs), TY Dolla Sign, and RL Grime (he was sooo good)

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

May was a very music-y month in general which is weird because I’m the type of person to just become obsessed with 4 songs a month and listen to them over and over again until I get sick of them. But even more interesting is that I listened to a bunch of kpop this month which if you know me well is not something that happens very often. I even learned what the word “bias” means in kpop fandom. My friend introduced me to Apink’s The Wave this month which I loved. But then, he told me that Jeong Eunji (who was the lead in Reply 1997 aka one of my fave kdramas) came out with a solo mini album “Dream” and I listened to it and oh man, do I love this album. It’s one of those rare albums where you love every single song. I’m just honestly so mesmerized by her voice. She just drags out words with just the right amount and it’s so strong but so clear..ugh I love it. My favorites from the album are:

Hopefully Sky

The music video is so soothing and whimsical…

and It’s Ok

Can I just say flawless??

Besides Apink, I have been loving BTS‘s new releases: Forever Young, Fire, and Save Me. Fire wins for favorite song (and weirdest music video, like why is that guy ironing the guy’s shirt that’s still on him???)

Save Me definitely wins for best choreography. It’s so precise and controlled but so graceful at the same time. Love it.

I also did not know khiphop was a thing until I looked at the spotify playlist and started listening to Okey Dokey.

It is so catchy and energetic. Also, sidenote, one of the lyrics in English is “I want cheesecake”. Do I even want to know the context?

Continuing my trend of loving Korean culture, I also ate a lot of Korean food. I went to a tofu house in Koreatown. I think I just love Korean side dishes in general and how you can just mix everything together and it would taste great regardless like bibimbap.

And of course, kbbq. Bulgogi and brisket for life. Also goodbye money..

And what is Korean culture without a korean drama? Coincidentally out of all the TV and movies I watched, a korean drama just happened to be my favorite this month. I did not plan this guys. But anyways, congratulations to my favorite TV show this month, Signal, for pulling at my heartstrings BUT also winning Best Screenplay, Best Actress, and Best Drama at the 52nd Baeksang Awards. I stayed up till 6am watching the livestream of this. This is literally the only allnighter I’ve pulled in my four years of college. But anyways, Signal seriously deserves all the praise. A mystery thriller with a touch of magical realism that was so suspenseful but so touching. I write all my rambly thoughts about it here.

The rest of my month was going to some formal events with my fraternity including initiation and banquet. The banquet was to celebrate the seniors’ graduation and our progress this quarter.

We joined as freshmen and 4 years later, here we are :’)

It was bittersweet going to my last formal event as an undergrad which seems to be a theme for this month.

April 2016 Favorites

I wish I could stay in April forever like another 2 months. It was just so relatively stress-free. If my life were a book, the chapter on April would be like the calm before the storm, the kiss before the big battle scene, the comic-relief scene before one unfortunate side character dies off.

I wish I could tell you that besides getting a letter of recommendation from my professor

Not my picture. It’s from the Keyclack blog

(finally), signing up for Anatomy summer classes, and sleeving cables (I sleeve USB cables for extra money), I was actually productive but I wasn’t. I basically skipped the majority of my classes. Probably used that time to watch TV and movies (which I’ll talk about in my What I’ve Been Watching post) or playing Stardew Valley. I was seriously addicted to Stardew Valley which is essentially like Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing from what I hear. It’s a farming game where you can meet people of the town and marry and grow crops and mine and even fight monsters. It sounds basic but you seriously never run out of things to do and it’s such a relaxing game.

Hey look it’s me and my farm. Only on a virtual farm will my plants actually grow -_- (my irl plants are all dead..)

I also took up Zumba which is actually so fun and such a good cardio workout but also such a good stress-reliever even if I don’t actually know any of the moves.. lol.. I also played badminton for the first time in what 4 years? I’d forgotten how much I loved it and how much energy it actually takes. Never underestimate how much sweat you accumulate just from waving a stick and hitting a birdie. And I even squeezed in two hikes. The first one was to the Jurupa Mountains Discovery Center where my friends and I went on a trail with a bunch of dinosaur statues.

We weren’t suppose to go up the mountain by ourselves but we did it anyways because we wanted the pictures. Eventually we got caught by the tourist guide because we suck at hiding but I felt like a little kid again going to see dinosaurs lol. The other one was to Heartrock where your destination is actually a rock shaped like a..heart..

do you see it?

Obviously after hikes, you gotta eat. I’ve been obsessed with acai bowls. How can something be so healthy and so good but look easy to make and is also really expensive at

Top: Juice It Up; Bottom: I forgot where I got this one but it was delicious

the same time?? I guess I can also say that about these chocolate bananas I love at Trader Joe’s. I thought I could make them myself but it turned out aesthetically not pleasing.

I tried Chinese dandan noodles for the first time which were essentially these noodles wrapped in peanut sauce and green onion. Also who can forget sushi?

Dragon Roll at Sushi OK; just the right blend of crispy and soft

And speaking of obsession, can I just say I still have feelings from watching Descendants of the Sun (review here). You know the obsession is real when it’s on your phone 13184552_10208260037355063_1069772270_owallpaper and you get emotional just listening to the soundtrack. And in between listening to that, I really liked My House by Flo Rida, Inside Out by Chainsmokers and finally getting on the Porter Robinson bandwagon. I also really liked Close by Nick Jonas ft. Tove Lo.

So all in all, a pretty good month even though it wasn’t super crazy. I think after my March, it was time to start appreciating the little things more. How was your April?? Were there any little things that might not seem big but made you excited? I hope it went really well and that there were little things that made you happy =)

February/March 2016 Favorites

Warning: Extreme Ranting Ahead..

Omigosh was February and March hectic. The beginning of March was especially stressful since my phone and wallet actually got stolen while I was taking a midterm at a theater near my school (yeah I actually have class in the movie theater). And yeah, some student decided it would be fun to steal my stuff WHILE I WAS TRYING TO PASS COLLEGE. Can you be any more cruel? But the police found them so it’s all good but then the next day I lose my apartment keys and then I found out I couldn’t call anyone so I had to buy a new SIM card and I was out all last week because my fraternity had rush and also my  new credit card isn’t working and I didn’t get the job I wanted..and because I had to cancel my credit card, my order for The Winner’s Kiss COULDN’T COME IN. Ok I’m done. Be calm, Carolyn.

It’s like the bucket of problems got dumped on me this month. And I’m telling you it’s not even the big problems that really frustrate me, it’s the addition of the little things. But on a side note, I’m so thankful to my friends and my sister for being so emotionally supportive during this time. I’ve honestly never felt so loved and I feel like everyone deserves a chance to feel this way at least once in their life.

In other more pleasant news, I got my eyebrows threaded for the first time and I did not know eyebrow shaping could make such a difference but it does! I also went shopping a lot because shopping is actually really therapeutic. I had my spring break where I honestly spent it all trying to find PAs to shadow (Why is this so hard?) and hanging out with my friends. If you follow me on instagram, you’ll know that I went to the Carlsbad Flower Fields. It was so pretty!! I’m not a big flower person but one look at these flowers and I was converted.

Ah, so serene..unlike my life

I think getting my eyebrows threaded got me really into more of the possibilities of makeup and I’ve been loving it.

I would highly recommend the Nyx eyebrow pencil. It just gets so much coverage with so little ink and the color is perfect for my brows. I’ve also been loving my Nyx liquid eyeliner as well.

This post was not sponsored by Nyx, fyi

White crop top from forever 21- so pretty and summery; I can’t wait to wear it in the upcoming weeks because it is so hot here in Socal.

This post was not sponsored by Forever21 but that tag is all kinds of cute.

Google Opinion Rewards-Basically you do free surveys for free money to buy things on the Google Play Store. You can’t really go wrong with that. I buy games and ebooks with it. Surprise, surprise.

Hymn for the Weekend-Coldplay’s new album is so awesome and I think this one’s my favorite out of all of them.

One Call Away by Charlie Puth– A random surprise

I Won’t Let You Walk Away-more EDM

Youth by Troye Sivan-My youth is yours.. This song has been playing nonstop for me. I even internally fangirled when I heard it playing at Starbucks

Wild by Troye Sivan– I love the melancholy in this song.

Lost Boy by Troye Sivan-I normally would not like the beat of htis song but something about it is just so charming and yeah this has been a Troye Sivan month. No shame.

Recommendations from Summer and Joey

Your Lie in April OST– AHH so beautiful, it makes me want to cry. Thanks for the rec Summer!

Smoke-filled room remix– I actually usually don’t like remixes but I really liked this one. Thanks Joey, I’ve been looking at all your retrospective posts for music recs 🙂

This whole month I haven’t watched basically anything but FRIENDS and this is actually the first time I’ve seen Friends. I know, I know, how can a lover of comedy not  have watched Friends by now. Well, funny story, I didn’t like Friends at first. I thought it wasn’t funny..but I’m officially converted! I don’t know why I didn’t see it before. It’s hilarious and charming and Joey and Chandler are probably my favorites haha 🙂

Well that’s it! Hopefully, hopefully, April brings better luck. Fingers crossed.
